Big Mountain evolved out of a band named Shiloh. Shiloh got together in 1988. Shiloh was made up of a talented core of musicians from California that was attempting to record reggae music in a traditional Jamaican form. Almost immediately Shiloh had an opportunity to go into the studio and recorded an album named “California Reggae”. Despite a limited release on a small independent label, the album found a loyal audience and a great deal of airplay especially in the West Coast of the US and the Hawaiian Islands. In 1992, all the members of Shiloh with the exception of the bass player went on to record Big Mountain’s first album “Wake Up”. The single “Touch My Light” became the #1 song in Los Angeles that summer and reached #46 on the Billboard charts and caught the attention of Giant Records, a subsidiary of Warner. Big Mountain signed an exclusive contract which led to the 1994 album “Unity”. While in the studio working on “Unity”, the band was approached to record a reggae version of Peter Frampton’s “Baby, I Love Your Way” for the soundtrack to the movie “Reality Bites”. Featured on the soundtrack and also included on Big Mountain’s 1994 “Unity” album, the song soared up the charts the all over the world. The single reached #2 on the U.S. charts and stayed in the top ten in Europe and Japan for months. With the worldwide success of “Baby I Love Your Way” and the following the release of the ‘Unity’ album, Big Mountain headlined two consecutive Reggae Sunsplash festivals in Jamaica during massive world tours that crisscrossed Europe, North and South America, Asia and Australia. Their third album “Resistance” was released in 1995, followed by “Free Up” in 1997, “Things to Come” in 1999, “Cool Breeze” in 2002, “New Day” in 2003, and “Versions Undercover” in 2004.
